Burl Story's World War II: A Narrative of Love, Heroism, and Legacy

This exhibit tells a tale of heroism and love, during World War II, focusing on the extraordinary life of Lieutenant Burl Storey. At the center of the display stands the complete uniform of this remarkable soldier, unearthed from a bygone museum in Arkansas. The ensemble is impressively preserved, with shoes, pants, and jacket all intact, rendering tangible a slice of history. Lieutenant Burl Storey, an Army Air Force pilot, left an enduring record of his experiences and emotions during the war years.

A Foot Locker purchased alongside the uniform contained more than 900 letters written by Burl to his wife, spanning from his enlistment in 1938 to his tragic death in 1944. Upon the opening of the Foot Locker, a letter postmarked the day of Burl's death was discovered, as if Lieutenant Storey was entrusting his legacy to those who would discover it. The exhibit features a meticulously curated collage that encapsulates Lieutenant Storey at different stages of his life.

A replica mailbox containing a selection of the letters offers visitors a glimpse into Burl's world during the turbulent war years. Efforts to locate and return these artifacts to Burl's family initially proved unsuccessful. The breakthrough came from a diligent intern from La Jolla Country Day, who uncovered a lead that connected the museum to Burl's grandson. After discussions within the family, they generously decided to allow the museum to retain and display Burl's belongings, contributing to the preservation of his memory. This decision shaped the creation of the exhibit.

It is more than a mere display of artifacts; it narrates the journey of a man during a crucial period in world history. Visitors are encouraged to spend time exploring and absorbing the life of Lieutenant Burl Storey, as their engagement contributes significantly to the preservation and honor of his legacy.
