Breaking the Code, Turning the Tide: Commander Joseph Rochefort and the Battle of Midway

Captain Joseph John Rochefort was instrumental in the U.S. Navy's cryptography and intelligence growth from 1925 to 1947. His crucial leadership helped lead to victory in the Pacific during WWII.

Rochefort was born in 1898, enlisted in the navy in 1918, and received a commission after graduating from the Stevens Institute of Technology. His onshore assignments included cryptanalytic training and Japanese language studies, as well as an intelligence post in San Diego.

In 1941, Rochefort was appointed as Officer in Charge (OIC) of Station Hypo in Pearl Harbor due to his skills as a linguist, analyst, and trained cryptanalyst. He assembled a team of the Navy's finest cryptanalysts, traffic analysts, and linguists.

After the attack on Pearl Harbor, Rochefort and his team deciphered Japanese naval communications, providing vital intelligence on Japanese force intentions. In May 1942, Rochefort analyzed and reported on as many as 140 decrypted messages daily.

His most significant accomplishment was providing crucial intelligence support during the Battle of Midway, often considered the turning point of the war in the Pacific. His team's reports continued to inform senior navy officers' decisions throughout the war.

Rochefort passed away in 1976. He was posthumously awarded the President's National Defense Service Medal in 1986 for his contributions to the Battle of Midway.
