This sign from Malmedy indicates that it was not just a city during World War II, but also the grim site of the infamous Malmedy Massacre. On December 17, 1944, during the pivotal Battle of the Bulge, 113 American soldiers were captured and machine-gunned by the 1st SS Panzer Regiment. In this harrowing incident, at least 84 US soldiers lost their lives. The lucky ones managed to escape the carnage by fleeing into the nearby woods or by playing dead.
