When Henry DeLand went broke, his friend John Stetson stepped up to save DeLand’s academy. Stetson was a world-famous hatmaker from Philadelphia. In his honor, the DeLand Academy was renamed Stetson University. John Stetson lived in a mansion about a mile to the west of our shop; he died there in February 1906.
